A lack of a plastic based finish means that structurally we can’t provide the level of gloss that Poly products (such as PU) provide. Instead of seeing a plasticky layer on top of the wood, you would essentially see the wood’s own features being accentuated. Waxes have a good amount of inherent sheen in them, but they need to be buffed for it to come out. Shellac is also good for this purpose.
